Emerson Begins 2020 with Strong Liquidity and Strategic Realignment Amid Market Shifts

Press Release — January 15, 2020

Detroit, MI — Emerson Motor Company enters the new year with a commanding cash flow of $60.6 billion, reinforcing its position as the world’s most liquid automaker. However, the company acknowledges a 35.4% decline in net income, driven by a 16.6% drop in global sales from 2018 to 2019 — a reflection of broader market contraction and shifting consumer preferences.

Despite these headwinds, Emerson maintains a formidable net worth of $7.44 trillion, underscoring its long-term resilience and capacity for innovation.

Market Performance Snapshot

  • Full-Size SUV Segment: Emerson holds 8.4% market share, up 0.3% from 2018, in a segment that contracted from 21.5 million to 20.7 million units.

  • Crossover Segment: Emerson leads with 19.5% market capture, overtaking BW in a category that saw 11.3 million units sold in 2019.

  • Full-Size Sedan Segment: Emerson sold:

    • 24,587 Dork Relates

    • 2,724 Emerson E-FSS (fully electric)

    • 3,933 Emerson Performance Relate EPs Out of 2,499,051 total sedans sold, this represents a 1.25% market share, signaling a need for strategic repositioning.

Strategic Realignment: Dork Division

Facing increased competition from Catty in the full-size sedan market, Emerson will cease production of the Dork Relate and its performance variant, reallocating those lines to support high-demand crossover and SUV models.

The transition is already underway with the launch of the 2020 Dork Myth, available in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. Built on Emerson Truck’s body-on-frame platform, the Myth departs from traditional unibody SUV design to deliver:

  • Enhanced structural rigidity

  • Improved ride smoothness

  • Superior comfort and durability

While many SUVs use body-on-frame for towing, the Myth’s 195-horsepower engine paired with an Emerson 6-speed automatic is tuned for passenger travel, not heavy hauling. Towing is not recommended in its current configuration.

Rising Stars: Retrieve 4 & Leonidas 4

Alongside the Myth’s early success, Dork’s other breakout performers include:

  • Retrieve 4: A crossover that sold 19,884 units in December 2019

  • Leonidas 4: A compact SUV with 12,425 units sold

Both models are experiencing strong demand, with over 10,000 customers currently awaiting delivery. The reallocation of Relate production capacity will directly support fulfillment of these backorders, ensuring Emerson meets market expectations and maintains momentum in the crossover and compact SUV segments.

Engineering Momentum & Forward Strategy

Emerson’s engineering and product teams are actively developing next-generation platforms that align with emerging trends in:

  • Electrification and hybrid optimization

  • Modular body architecture

  • Global fuel-efficiency governance

The company remains focused on:

  • Expanding its AllPerDrive™ suite across Europe

  • Integrating EMCall into CRM ecosystems for enhanced customer lifecycle management

  • Accelerating innovation in crossover, EV, and performance segments

Emerson’s liquidity, engineering depth, and strategic foresight position it to thrive in a transforming global automotive landscape.
