To combat BW's progression, Emerson has designed the replacement Expression ELQ.

The Expression ELQ has been a top seller in the crossover segment, selling just over 9,000 models as of May 2019, making it the second-best-selling Allure model behind the massively successful Cove base and sport models.

This replacement is not as straightforward as it may seem, with Allure changing the name of its mid-size SUV model to Expression, leaving the ELQ of the crossover without a replacement. However, Allure has started the design phase that could take up to 17 months for completion.

Executive decisions like model names that change market segments, while not wise at times, can be beneficial if resurrecting models, but this transition takes place one after the other. The result is that for 2019 there are two Expression models for sale: the outgoing 2015-designed full-size crossover and the 2019-designed mid-size SUV.

The 2019 model's current sales are 2,094, while the crossover is still selling 9,377, meaning that Allure's ELQ crossover replacement is late given the numbers, and the 2019 model, while not a flop, is not performing as well as expected.

The new model will be called the Allure Sylherin ELQ and will be downsized from the 2015 Expression ELQ. This strategic shift aims to capture a broader market segment while addressing consumer preferences for more compact vehicles. As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the success of the Sylherin ELQ will depend on its design, features, and marketing approach.
