GearCity: SimulationGC7 Update
SimulationGC7
Overview
Working both ends of the spectrum is a blessing and a curse. The blessing is the ability to make adjustments to the files and to see the results play out in a gradual fashion, communicated through reports and vehicle sales. The curse is the fact that information editing is an unknown adventure for me. These, combined with the time it takes to perform the tasks and then try to develop a strategy that is constantly changing based on the edits, provide a challenge.
Challenges
Challenges are good for the mind and education of the industry that is contained within the simulated environment. However, these events and calculations take their toll on the mind. In the beginning, I was mentally tired after strategizing a 30-day event against the other automakers. This may sound easy to some, but I have found that a few adjustments change the landscape of probabilities.
Probabilities create new events, which in turn present choices that are needed for the corporation to survive and for the people who work for you to provide for their families or themselves. Depending on their family situation, this could mean something different for each person contained within the simulation. Google calls this the architects' vision, but it is the vision of the people contained within the simulation. Meaning, the corporation strives, but this is only possible through the communication of the people living in the simulation. This could be displayed through the reports, sales, or news, and based on this information, there is background processing that produces events that are not visually communicated.
How do I deal with the unknown, or the lack of visually communicated information? I think, listen, read, and meditate on the information provided. Sometimes this can be overwhelming due to the updates that are done during the 30-day events between turns. If rushed, like I have done in the past, it will result in the corporation getting away from me, meaning I am not managing the operation but just going along for the ride. This could be sustained with Emerson Motors having over 6 trillion in liquid assets, but having a lot of money does not solve the management equation. It helps but by no means solves the equation of employee, vehicle, union, corporation, and self.
Is the intent to win the GearCity/SimulationGC7 situation? No. I am not sure if this is possible. This game, a simulation based on personalized updates, is by all means not a win-or-lose situation or environment. The point is not to win but to test out strategies in an ever-changing environment that presents some predictable variables as well as unpredictable ones. If a person just tries to win, they move closer to losing everything.
Are there meaningful changes? Yes. The environment has changed from the events of past resets. I find that the addition of Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, and Hawaii, as well as the Rust Belt, European, and some island additions, creates another challenge of expanding moving forward or following the customers. This is a hard pill to swallow, as it implies that the business owner needs to listen to the customer who is buying their vehicles. But this can also be a trap of growth, meaning that customers want what they want, but corporations have needs too.
Moving Forward
Do I feel like I can run a corporation like this in the real world? Maybe. Simulations provide a basis of information that is based on one person strategizing against computer-generated people and events based on code and file integrations. These are very different from real-life people who have feelings, needs, and expectations that affect output, efficiency, and products.
Am I trying to upstage the developer? By all means, no. I understand their point of view and have expanded it through this project of their older version.
Do I work for the developer? No.
Am I trying to get something from the developer? No. I genuinely like the game, and I just wanted (not a need) to make things different without losing the developer's passion.
Outcome
What's next for SimulationGC7 updates? To gradually add in different rates that promote background events and some visual events. This is only possible once the simulation is moving forward. Meaning, I could overload the system, as done before, with the result of a loss, or I can live within the simulation along with the other people, interacting and thinking about how we will survive the next event while preserving the union perspective, competitive landscape, and corporate design horizons.
